Gold Star Families Memorial - The Thistle - Organizers are appealing to the public to raise funds for a memorial to families who lost loved ones in the fighting.
A Gold Star Families Memorial is planned for the Forks Transit Center plaza, 551 S. Forks Ave. Organizers made the announcement after Clallam Transit and the City of Forks gave permission to set it up there.

"Every war has hit someone in this community," said Janet Hughes, co-chair with her husband Thomas Hughes of the Forex Commission. They are also honorary members of the Hershel "Woody" Williams National Medal of Honor Foundation, which creates memorials.
Tribute To Gold Star Families
Members of Fletcher-Wittenborn Post 9106 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and their assistants have registered with the foundation to raise funds to build the memorial.
Organizers aim to complete the fundraiser by April, begin work in June, and dedicate the memorial on September 29, Gold Star Mother's Day and Gold Star for Families.
In addition to written grants, committee members are asking the community to help with fundraising programs such as dinners and bake sales.
Today at lunch at the VFW Auditorium at 110 S. Spartan Ave. a short public presentation about the project is planned. , which follows the 11 a.m. Veterans Day Gala presented by the VFW and members of the American Legion at the Forks Transit Center.

The ceremony also marks the centenary of the end of World War I when the treaty was signed at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
If the memorial becomes a reality, according to J. Hughes, it will.
J. Hughes choked back tears and said among the local stories she had heard was one about a pair of twins contemplating fighting in the Korean War.
"That's why (President Donald) Trump went (to Korea) and the signing of this agreement to return the bodies is so important," she said. "It's really important to get an answer for these families."

The £15,000 black granite memorial will have the words "Gold Star Families Memorial, honoring the Gold Star Families and relatives who sacrificed a loved one for our freedom" on one side, while the other side will reflect the local community through granite plaques will be the homeland and family, patriotism and sacrifice created in Forks.
In the center of the tribute is a cutout depicting the person who died in battle.
At the Transit Center Plaza you will be joined by other memorials: the Blue Star Memorial Highway Landmark erected by the Boggachell Garden Club, the Spartan Memorial for those who died too soon, and the Bush Smoke in memory of Lance Corporal. Jason Hanson, who lost his life in Iraq on July 29, 2006.
The national effort was started in 2010 by Iwo Jima Medal of Honor recipient Woody Williams, who recognized when a loved one made the ultimate sacrifice in the military, the loss was for the entire family and loved ones.

"The memorial is not a war memorial but is for the families here in the West End and those who visit," reads an article on the Forex forums, edited by Christie Barron, who is also a member of the local committee.
"These families have had to survive each day knowing that every vacation will be different because their loved one is not here."
J. Hughes said Williams' goal is to have at least one memorial in every state. As of August 1, about 39 monuments have been dedicated, with 41 more in the works, representing 37 states, mostly in the eastern United States.
In addition to Hughes and Barron, the other members of the forex panel are Mike Rowley, Bill Plumley and Mike McCracken.

A donation of $25 or more can be returned with a pin at the memorial with a fork at the base of the memorial.
A donation of $100 or more may result in the donor receiving a special 2 inch coin made specifically for the Forex Memorial. The coin has a memorial on the obverse and five service medals on the reverse. In the center of the medallions is a folded flag.
In 1917, people hung a blue star banner to let their neighbors and the community know that a loved one was fighting in the war. The gold star represents a family member killed in battle.
"Every family that has a Blue Star prays they will never have a Gold Star," said J. Hughes.

Committee members said the purpose of the Gold Star memorial was to ensure those lost in battle were not forgotten.

This is a message that the Mayor and City Council wanted to convey to the Gold Star families in southern Jordan and throughout the Salt Lake Valley.
The Gold Star Families Memorial is a two-sided black granite tribute. One side bears the words: Gold Star Families Memorial, a tribute to the Gold Star Families and Kin who sacrificed a loved one for our freedom. On the other side of the monument, scenes are engraved on each of the four panels: Home, Family, Patriotism, and Sacrifice. Central to this tribute is the silhouette of a saluting service member, representing the legacy of the loved one who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 14, 2022, and the city is planning an autumn dedication of the memorial.
