Eligible family members of sailors who lost their lives may request a replacement Gold Star lapel pin and next-of-kin lapel pin. : FORT BENNING, Ga., (May 28, 2014) -- Memorial Day weekend represented more than barbecue and the beach for Nicole DiCenzo. It was also the eighth anniversary of the death of her husband, Capt. Doug DiCenzo, who was killed in an IED explosion in Baghdad, Iraq.

DiCenzo and other Gold Star families wear Gold Star pins to remember their fallen loved ones and to remind others of their many sacrifices. But talking to people about the death of a family member can create an awkward situation.
"If they feel comfortable, they can give me a hug because I need all the support I can get," she said. "If you could pray to the sky, if you could see a gold star on the back of my car, that would be amazing."
Gold Star pins are usually presented at military funerals to family members of service members who have died on active duty. Survivor Outreach Services has launched the second phase of a national campaign to raise awareness of the Gold Star Pin as part of its goal of giving the public an opportunity to say thanks and support. For many family members, growing awareness about Gold Star Pins can start with a simple conversation.
"It's a tough subject because people ask you a question and you want to shed light on it," said Brittany Lawrence, widow of Capt. Joshua Lawrence, who was killed in action Oct. 8, 2011, in Afghanistan. "The Gold Star is an honor. It's a tragic story of a fallen hero, but being the wife of a Gold Star is such an honor because I get to carry on his legacy and honor and him and his memory and inspire other soldiers to be incredible. .Leaders like him.

Lawrence works with Survivor Outreach Services and participates in resiliency training at Fort Benning. She said the SOS group continues to seek out surviving mothers and wives to participate in group activities and occasionally gather for functions on post.
"I think it's always your family," Lawrence said. "Family understands more than what you've been through and what you still go through every day."
Sherrell Shaw, widow of Staff Sgt. Alan Shaw said the gold star pin represents the courage and sacrifice of fallen heroes and those who live to carry on their legacy.
"For some reason, we've forgotten what it means to be a member of a Gold Star family," she said. "Those of us who wear this pin are not looking for any personal recognition, but we want to make sure no one ever forgets the sacrifices my husband and so many others made on the battlefield." Decals are available in four different sizes as reflective or non-reflective. Other sizes are also available on request.
Please note: the 2" decal is very small. It is about the size of two quarters side by side.
Clean the surface where you apply the sticker with pure alcohol and dry with a clean cloth. Do not use alcohol pads. Be careful when applying the decal as the adhesive sets quickly and the decal cannot be repositioned. For vehicle glass or other exterior surfaces, the surface temperature should be in the range of 50 to 70 degrees. Extreme temperatures will prevent the decal from adhering properly.
Wash the decals with warm water and gently wipe the surface with a clean cloth. Harsh soaps, waxes and water-repellent products will destroy the sticker.
What Is A Gold Star Family?
I misunderstood the details of this product. I thought it could be placed on an interior window with the design facing outwards. The adhesive is on the back of the decal, not the front, so it's impossible. As a Gold Star Wife, I was looking for a way to display Gold Star status.
Second time order and another great product. I wish I didn't need or want a Gold Star flag, but in memory and honor of my son I proudly display and purchase an extra one for the family.
I wish I didn't have to buy this decal (Gold Star Mother) but I never want my son to forget it. Thanks for doing this for me.
