Russian Terminator Tanks - This is a Russian tank support combat vehicle (BMPT), photographed during exercises in 2017. Dubbed "Terminators" by their manufacturer, Uralvagonzavod, the vehicles attracted a flood of media attention at the end of May after they were spotted in Ukraine.
The photo above and two recent amateur videos allegedly show the presence of Russian Terminators around the city of Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine. The presence of the car in Ukraine was apparently confirmed on May 18 in a report by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
Russian Terminator Tanks
Terminators are the result of Russia's quest to develop vehicles designed for combat in confined urban spaces. That need became urgent after the first Chechen war in which Chechen fighters wiped out huge numbers of Russian armored vehicles.

During the 1994-95 battle for the Chechen capital Grozny, local fighters could lean out of windows and doors to fire cheap anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades and then disappear into familiar territory. The firepower of the Russian tanks was negated by their inability to shoot straight up or turn their guns low enough to kill the Chechen fighters who sometimes lurked in cellars waiting for Russian armor.
Modern military tactics consider tanks to work alongside infantry on urban battlefields. The infantry escort provides the eyes and ears of the tank crew and can directly engage enemy fighters from any direction while the tank provides reliable cover from small arms fire.
Russian Terminators are intended to fight in urban environments alongside tanks, replacing that need for support infantry. It is unclear whether Terminator crew locked in heavy armor will be able to match the situational awareness of troops out in the open.
The Terminators are armed with twin autocannons (upper middle of this photo) each capable of firing more than 10 30mm rounds per second. The weapon can be loaded with multiple different shells, which means that the gunner can fire armor-hardening rounds from one barrel, then immediately switch to firing explosive rounds from the other gun, or fire both at once.

The combat vehicles also carry guided missiles (on either side of the guns in this photo) and a machine gun. The version of the BMPT shown here has two grenade launchers (one shown below left).
There are currently at least two different versions of the Terminator. One model is equipped with twin grenade launchers and has a crew of five, the other requires a crew of only three and operates without a grenade launcher. Terminators spotted in Ukraine appear to have mounted grenade launchers.
Russian BMPTs are also equipped with armor that explodes outward when hit by a projectile, neutralizing some anti-tank shells. Other defensive measures include slatted armor - the metal grid seen in the photo above that can disrupt the penetrating power of some anti-tank weapons. At least one Russian tank with similar advanced reactive armor was destroyed during the fighting in Ukraine.
It is not known how many Terminators Russia currently has in service, but in late 2021 Russia added 10 tank regiments to its Central Military District.
Russia Deploys 'terminator' Tanks In Ukraine War
Some Western analysts said the deployment of several rare combat vehicles was a sign of the Kremlin's "frustration", while Russian commentators hailed their use as an example of the depth of Russia's arsenal.
In any case, the presence of Terminators in the Donbass, where advanced anti-tank weapons await the Russian advance, is certainly a gamble. The Russian military's carefully crafted image of "invincibility" would take a further blow if the Terminators go bad in Ukraine. Tank support vehicles are designed to protect Russian tanks from enemy infantry. They are basically a replacement for mechanized infantry troops on the urban battlefield.
Russia has deployed the Terminator tank support system - BMPT, also known as BMPT "Terminator" and its new version BMPT-72 - in an area that remains its immediate tactical priority in the war in Ukraine, according to Western intelligence. . What is this latest addition to Russia's mechanized combat vehicle inventory, and what does its deployment mean in the ongoing conflict?
The Terminator or Boevaya Mashina Podderzhki Tankov (BMPT) is a tank-supported combat vehicle developed by Russia.
Russia Deploys Its 'terminator' Vehicle In Sign Of Frustration
Western military analysts believe that Russia developed the Terminator after identifying a need to provide dedicated protection to the main battle tanks it used in the Afghan and Chechen wars.
The high level of wear and tear of Russian tanks in the ongoing war in Ukraine due to the use of anti-tank weapons supplied by the West seems to have led Russian military commanders to introduce the Terminator. The move is intended to provide close protection to Russian armor against Ukrainian anti-tank infantry.
According to the latest intelligence bulletin released by the British Ministry of Defense on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia's only operational company of BMP-T Terminator tank support vehicles is likely to be deployed on the northern axis of the Donbass offensive.
According to British intelligence and several independent observations of Terminators, their presence suggests that the Central Group of Forces (CGF) is involved in this attack - the only formation of the Russian army that uses this vehicle.
Russia Abandoning Kherson Is Good For Ukraine (but The War Is Not Over) — Defense Priorities
According to a bulletin from the British Ministry of Defence, the CGF had previously suffered heavy losses until it was able to break through to eastern Kiev in the first phase of the invasion.
For now, the Severodonetsk region remains one of Russia's immediate tactical priorities. But with a maximum of ten Terminators deployed, they are unlikely to have a significant impact on the campaign.
The list of powerful weapons equipped with the Terminator includes 4x130mm Ataka-T GVS launchers, 2x30mm 2A42 autocannons (850 rounds), 2x30mm AG-17D or 2x AGS-30 grenade launchers (600 rounds), machine gun 0 × 07.62, mm rounds) .
This weapon is capable of firing in multiple directions in quick succession, suppressing firepower to prevent any attempt to take out protected tank columns.

The BMPT destroys targets such as infantry personnel carrying anti-tank weapons as well as lightly and heavily armored targets such as tanks. The BMPT can also be used in alternate uses and can provide protection to infantry or convoys.
The BMPT was first introduced into the public domain during the Russian arms fair held in Nizhny Tagil in 2013. Guerrilla warfare tactics used by Chechen fighters in Grozny during the First Chechen War in 1995 led to the development of this weapon system, as well as many Russian tanks were lost in urban battles.
Terminators, the first version BMP-T and the new version BMPT-72, are based on the chassis of the T-72 tank and are made by the Russian company Uralvagonzavod.
The latest Terminator upgrade is equipped with fragmentation ammunition, which is essential for targeting enemy infantry waiting to destroy tanks. Information in the public domain also shows that the increased height of the weapon makes it possible to engage the upper floors of buildings in urban areas, as well as low-flying aircraft / drones. The manufacturer claims that one Terminator can replace two conventional BMPs and an infantry platoon. Putin Uses Terminator War Tanks To Obliterate Brit Missiles
MOSCOW – The Russian army received its first batch of Terminator tank support vehicles for testing on Monday.
The Terminator, previously financially ignored by the Ministry of Defense, has proven its effectiveness during recent Russian combat operations in Syria.
On December 2, Russian state television showed Terminators attached to the 90th Tank Division in the Chelyabinsk region of the Urals. "The uniqueness of this vehicle is its ability to track three targets simultaneously with all its weapon systems," Colonel Andrey Sigarev, deputy commander of the tank division, told Channel One television.
The Terminator is equipped with the Ataka supersonic anti-tank missile system, which is capable of hitting targets up to 6 kilometers, two 30 mm cannons that can be used against infantry and helicopters, two grenade launchers and a Kalashnikov assault rifle. The car can reach a speed of 60 km/h and is operated by a crew of five. Its design is based on the T-90 tank.
Russia's Fearsome Terminator Tank Was A No Show At The Victory Day Parade
According to military experts, one Terminator can replace a motorized rifle platoon of 40 soldiers and six armored vehicles.
The Russian army received eight Terminator vehicles, which will be tested during military exercises. The vehicles, which were first shown to the public during the annual military parade on Red Square in 2018, took part in the Russian operation in Syria.
"The Terminator has proven to be a 'universal soldier' capable of fighting single-handedly terrorists armed with small arms, grenade launchers and [anti-tank guided missiles], as well as opposing tank platoons equipped with unmanned aerial vehicles," Viktor Litovkin, retired army colonel and senior military analyst for the Russian news agency Tass, Defense News said.
His experience on the battlefield "dispelled general doubts about his adoption by the Russian army and increased his export potential," Litovkin explained.

In 2010, the Ministry of Defense abandoned plans to financially support the development of the Terminator. At that time, the ministry was headed by Anatoly Serdyukov, who at one point proposed buying weapons of foreign origin to encourage military modernization.
