Ruger Ranch .223 - The Ruger American Ranch Rifle (RARR) is a simple and affordable 16″ barrel bolt action that can be chambered in multiple chambers. Weight ranges from 5.5-6lbs depending on caliber, and although the default color scheme is a tan stock with a matte black receiver and barrel, several distributor exclusive colors are available.

The Ruger "Ranch" moniker has some history, first being used in the early 1980s in connection with versions of the Ruger Mini-14 that had their receivers cut off for a scope ring. It was one of these models, in fact, that was my first rifle.

Current chamberings are 5.56, 6.5 Grendel, .300BLK, 7.62×39, .350 Legend, and .450 Bushmaster. Like all American Ruger rifles, they come with an adjustable Ruger Marksman 3-5lb trigger, and have a 3-lug, double 70 degree locking cam. They also have a Picatinny rail scope base and feature a block receiver and floating barrel. On paper, they represent very good value for a bolt action rifle. This value is one of the reasons I chose the .300 Blackout chambered, flush fit magazine RARR for well below MSRP. MSRP for all RARR cameras is $549.

The Ruger American Ranch Rifle arrives in a cardboard box, and is adorned with an easy-to-remove Ruger sticker intended to make the rifle stand out on a gun store rack. After getting rid of the sticker and inserting the bolt, I noticed that this particular rifle did not seem to have any rough spots during the movement of the bolt in the receiver. There were certainly machine marks on the bolt and inside the receiver, but they could not be detected when moving the bolt. It's no Sawyer 404, but it's pretty stylish.

The matte black finish was even and well applied, and the thread protector integrated well with the rest of the barrel. The Ruger Marksman trigger has been set from the factory at 3.5 lbs. It is an excellent trigger, and represents a massive improvement from the triggers that most factory guns in this price range had when I started shooting. The tang-mounted safety went into both positions securely and with a reasonable level of pressure. Overall, there were no immediate problems with the gun on first impression. If I had to nit-pick, I'd say the polymer stock is a little slicker to grip, and a little stronger to handle.

The Picatinny rail on the Ruger American Ranch Rifle looks well made and is in-spec. I had no problems with any of the rings or one-piece mounts for testing/review purposes on this rifle. I set it up on a Bobro mount with a Vortex Razor HD LH 1.5-8x scope for testing purposes. The thread protectors are flat, but I didn't need them, and it threaded well with a fair amount of hand pressure.

A .300BLK chambered shotgun is sad without a barrel, so I threw on my old 1st Generation Gemtec Sandstorm. A Harris bipod and Bradley adjustable cheek riser thrown over the front stud sling round out the range readiness of this little gun. Of course, minimalists can just throw in a red dot or Nodak spud iron sights and be good to go too.

I first took the Ruger American Ranch rifle out for scope and initially tested it in the woods. Carried in my one-frame pack, the RARR was handy and easy to pack. Using S&B Subsonic 200gr I shot some early groups on 50y braided from the package. Extremely quiet (slowly snapping fingers) 5 shot groups had all rounds hit the center of the USPSA 1/2 size silhouette, a good start.

The soft rubber buttpad does an excellent job of mitigating recoil. I have had beginner shooters of all ages shoot this rifle, and they all enjoyed the minimal recoil of the rifle. The excellent trigger is also appreciated by all.

Later, I took RARR long term. The offset between supersonic and subsonic rounds was easy enough to detect on the scope, and the RARR printed very accurate groups with all three ammunition loads at 100y. Supersonic ammo averages about 3/4 MOA. Moving to a longer range, I was able to get repeatable hits at 400y on steel, although if I wanted to shoot the medium game with the .300 BLK round, the maximum range would be around 300y.

While at the range, I noticed that while the subsonic ammo reports extremely quiet, the bolt cycle on this rifle is not. It is one of the strongest bolts in its function. If possible, I would recommend having one already in the camera before making your final version of the game. There is no good way to silently fire a round in this gun. On the bright side, the Ruger American Rifles bolt can be supplied with a safety.

The flush fit plastic magazine is a big negative on this rifle. Made of flimsy, flimsy plastic, the magazine also has the unfortunate appearance of the bolt exerting enough downward pressure on the stock that it misfires if one only has one round in the magazine. I have done this several times with all three different weights. The only way to load it was to counteract the bolt pressure by applying pressure to the magazine flat with my support hand. I've also had negative experiences with other Ruger American flush fit magazines, including one that fell apart completely when shooting a .450 Bushmaster model.

Normally, I advise potential buyers to avoid buying the flush fit magazine version, but Ruger has discontinued this model, offering only the version that uses AR15 magazines at the time of writing this article. I can only speculate that maybe there is a connection between this problem and the fact that Ruger has discontinued the model.

Besides the problem with the last round in the magazine, I have had zero other malfunctions with the rifle in over 200 rounds.

The Ruger American Ranch Rifle in .300BLK is a good value. Objectively, it is compact, accurate, has a light, crisp adjustable trigger, suitable barrel length for the caliber, and comes with a threaded barrel and Picatinny rail base from the factory. In particular, it would make for a great truck/tractor/4-wheeler gun, or valuable hunting rifle for a new hunter in particular. If you're in the market for good value for money but an accurate bolt action in any of their available calibers, take a look at the Ruger American Ranch Rifle. Just be aware of the problem with flush fit magazine releases.
